Shell Rotella: Long Haul

Challenge

Shell Rotella wanted to encourage truck owners and operators to trade up to a more premium engine oil which delivers longer drain intervals and improved engine efficiency. The traditional conventions of the category was to communicate using technical claims and engineering speak. To stand out, and create a more effective campaign, we knew we needed to break that norm.

Strategic Unlock

The category spoke to truckers like engineers. But truckers don't define themselves by oil viscosity or engine specifications. They define themselves by the miles they cover, the businesses they build and the families they support. Longer drain intervals and better engine performance ultimately mean more time on the road doing what matters. If we wanted truckers to believe Shell Rotella was built for the long haul, we first had to show we understood what their long haul looked like.

Creative Solution

We stopped talking like an engine oil brand and started talking like a trucker. Long Haul celebrated the resilience, pride and determination that define life behind the wheel, positioning Shell Rotella as a brand that was in it for the long haul too. By reflecting the values of the trucking community instead of listing product features, we turned a premium engine oil into a badge of shared identity.

Results

The campaign became the highest-performing premiumization campaign in Shell's global pre-market testing, proving that speaking to truckers as people, not engineers, was a far more powerful way to sell a premium product.
